Online gambling is a lucrative investment and operators are found anywhere across the globe. That’s why it’s important to know the rules and regulations of each country. In this post, we’ll tackle the different processes of procuring a gaming license in various countries.

If you’re Australian and clearly love poker, it’s best not to go online to play as the IGA (Interactive Gambling Act) 2001 prevents Aussies from participating in poker and casino games online. Betting on the World Wide Web for Australians is limited to sports and lotto betting including online lotteries offering virtual scratch cards and lottery tickets. Whether foreign-owned or managed by locals, gaming providers are not allowed to provide virtual services in any part of Australia.
The following are prohibited by the IGA:
• Virtual casinos that offer online gambling services involving real money to Australian residents
• Advertising online gambling services that offer real money to Aussies
As of the moment, interactive gambling in this country is under review. If you have any concerns, you may get in touch with a representative at (+61) 2 6207 2086 or email
2. Alderney
In 2000, the AGCC (Alderney Gambling Control Commission) was established. This opened doors to electronic gambling to an island that was considered part of the British Channel Islands, but not of the European Union. That fact, however, didn’t stop Alderney and other channel islands to becoming established offshore finance and leading e-commerce centers.
What you need to know about e-gambling in Alderney:
• There are two categories for licensing: 1) Category 1 license for B2C that allows providers to prepare and organize their services, and processes registration and verification of players as well. 2) Category 2 license for B2B involves operational gambling transactions for the platform.
• Getting a gambling license in Alderney is highly beneficial. Companies with such licenses are exempted from paying income tax. They only need to pay a small, fixed non-profit fee on an annual basis. Aside from that, there are no Value Added Taxes or other taxes operators have to worry about.

Two distinct restrictions for online casinos to be legal across Austria are the following:
• Austrian companies can apply for igaming license but these websites should only have Austria players.
• Austrian players can choose both local operators and foreign-owned online casinos. However, only Austrian-owned operators can advertise their websites in the country.
Did you know that one of the first countries to regulate online gambling is Curaçao? This is probably the reason why the country has its gaming license processes down pat. First of all, Curaçao offers only one type of license for both software and product providers and this covers most games including sports betting. However, there are two kinds of formats for licensing:
• Master License – offered to the gaming company who can offer the sub-license in turn.
• Sub License – Third parties with a sub-license are still subject to the rules and regulations of the e-gaming company with the master license. However, they cannot offer sub-license to other companies.
Operators who have a license from Curaçao enjoy the low income tax rate of 2%, and benefits such as zero import duties and 0% sales tax.
Costa Rica
Jurisdictions and regulations in Costa Rica is fairly lenient and that’s the reason why over 300 e-gaming companies has made this country their home when it comes to getting online gaming licenses. Operators have no specific license, but have to work under the “data processing license”.
These are the requirements for gambling companies who wish to operate with a Costa Rican gaming license:
• They must have a physical office in the country. The best thing you can do is sought help from local consultants who can assist you with finding a location, registration and other processes involved.
• Once you have permissions from the government, these consultants can help you with the data processing license.
• Pay the fees. Setting up and getting the license cost $15,000. Every three months, you need to pay $1, 500 to ensure your license is active.
